SUMMARY:NAIRN Book and Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:AN Treas Suaile: An evening of conversation\, music and song with Julie Fowlis and Duncan Chisholm. \nIn the early hours of New Year’s Day 1919\, more than 200 servicemen returning from the First World War drowned when their boat sank at the entrance to Stornoway Harbour. The tragedy of HMY Iolaire continues to cast a long shadow across the islands\, many of whose residents have close connections with the men who perished. 100 years after the event and inspired by John Finlay MacLeod\, whose heroism and quick thinking helped save dozens of lives that night\, Julie Fowlis and Duncan Chisholm created a new work entitled An Treas Suaile (The Third Wave) which brought audiences closer to this devastating story. The production was part of 14-18 NOW\, the UK’s five-year arts programme marking the centenary of the First World War. The work was originally co-commissioned with An Lanntair to mark 100 years since the Iolaire disaster. An Treas Suaile gives a powerful insight into the events leading up to the tragedy\, together with incredible stories of survival\, community and faith. Join Julie and Duncan for an extraordinary evening of music\, song\, conversation and a presentation of filmed elements of the original work.

SUMMARY:BELFAST\, Tradfest (with Allt and The Ulster Orchestra)
DESCRIPTION:Belfast TradFest is delighted to present a very special collaborative concert featuring Julie Fowlis\, Éamon Doorley\, Zoë Conway and John McIntyre\, together known as Allt\, with The Ulster Orchestra. \nJulie Fowlis\, the acclaimed Scottish singer whose ethereal voice brought Hebridean authenticity to Disney/Pixar’s Brave\, is internationally celebrated for her ability to connect traditional Gaelic song with global audiences. She joins forces with virtuoso violinist Zoë Conway from Co. Louth\, known for her genre-spanning artistry and collaborations with artists such as Damien Rice\, Lou Reed\, Nick Cave\, Riverdance\, and Rodrigo y Gabriela. Guitarist John McIntyre\, rooted in the musical traditions of Co. Donegal\, brings a unique blend of subtlety and soul through his sensitive accompaniment and distinctive vocal style. Completing the ensemble is Éamon Doorley\, founding member of Danú\, whose rhythmic mastery on the bouzouki and skillful arrangements add depth and drive to this exceptional collaboration. \nTogether\, this quartet creates a vibrant and contemporary chamber group sound that is deeply rooted in their collective cultures while pushing the boundaries of traditional music. All four have composed new music and songs in the Gaelic language for this project. \nTheir performances\, with tight vocal harmonies alongside thoughtful and spacious arrangements are a testament to the power of cultural collaboration and showcase the deep historical bonds between Gaelic Scotland and Ireland. Tonight\, they will be joined by the Ulster Orchestra in a special celebration of this cultural collaboration. \n‘Musical magic’ – The Irish Times

DESCRIPTION:Transatlatic Sessions \n\n\n\n\nTransatlantic Sessions returns for 2025\, marking 30 years since the original TV series first aired and continuing to explore and celebrate the rich musical traditions that connect Scotland\, Ireland and the US. An annual focal point of Celtic Connections\, the exclusive line-up combines guest singers and the celebrated house band\, inviting them to interweave original material with age-old tunes and songs as they explore shared roots and find new common ground. \nFor the past fifty-four years\, Loudon Wainwright III has carved out a distinguished career as one of our most original singer-songwriters\, releasing over thirty albums\, winning a Grammy\, acting in films and TV shows (including MASH)\, and has had his songs recorded by artists including Johnny Cash\, Mose Allison\, Bonnie Raitt\, and his own son\, Rufus Wainwright. \nHailing from the Outer Hebrides and now based in the Highlands\, Julie Fowlis (perhaps best known for her work with the Disney Pixar movie Brave) is widely heralded for championing traditional Gaelic. Her music is deeply influenced by the Hebridean islands where she grew up and by the Highland landscapes where she now resides. \nAcclaimed Americana musicians Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams bring their deep-rooted songs and instrumental virtuosity to the Transatlantic Sessions stage\, honed by years of touring (both together and separately) with a who’s-who of American music: Bob Dylan\, kd lang\, Levon Helm\, Sheryl Crow\, John Prine\, Keith Richards\, and Emmylou Harris to name a few. \nBorn on Clare Island\, Co.Mayo\, Niall McCabe grew up in the family-run pub awash with strong musical influences from traditional Irish and folk to rock and soul. Having earned a reputation as one of Ireland’s finest singers and songwriters\, he has performed extensively across Ireland\, Europe and the USA. \nThe show’s seasoned house band\, guided as ever by Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas\, features renowned Celtic and Americana roots musicians Phil Cunningham\, John Doyle\, Michael McGoldrick\, Tatiana Hargreaves & Allison de Groot\, John McCusker\, Donald Shaw\, James Mackintosh and Daniel Kimbro.
