Julie Fowlis - The Arts Centre
APRIL 3 2007, SWINDON: The sights and sounds of the Scottish Hebrides are the inspiration behind the crystal voice of Julie Fowlis.
The folk singer is heading for Swindon next month, when she will be singing songs from her new album called Cuilidh.
Cuilidh is a Gaelic noun pronounced Kool-ee, which means a hiding place for your precious things.
Many of the tracks on her album were gleaned from old friends and family in Scotland.
"It is an honour for me to sing these songs that have been so kindly passed to me by family and friends," said Julie.
"It has been a joy making this record with such talented friends."
Julie sings songs that are shrouded in the folklore of North Uist, which is where Julie was born.
Her award-winning debut album - Mar A Tha Mo Chridhe, which means As My Heart Is - came out in 2005 and won the support of Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2.
Julie also won the radio station's Folk Award for Best Newcomer that year.
She has showcased her gaelic music in both Texas and New York, as well as Europe.
Julie mixes Gaelic songs with English- speaking storytelling in her concerts.
She is singing at The Arts Centre, Devizes Road, Old Town in Swindon on April 3 at 8pm. Tickets cost £12 from 01793 614837.
