‘moving, beautiful, thoughtful, creative and quintessentially Gaelic….a truly wonderful experience, brilliantly executed’
This is just one description of the half-documentary, half-arthouse meditation on the history, landscape and legend of the now-uninhabited Monach Isles, or Heisgeir as they are most often referred to locally, one of the most westerly lying Hebridean islands. This dynamic new musical work, which was commissioned by the Highland festival 'Blas' in 2011, and which was performed to a sold-out audience at Celtic Connections 2012, combines newly composed and traditional material and is presented as an HD quality feature length film with a captivating musical soundtrack.
Building on her own family connections to Heisgeir, Julie has taken inspiration from the geography, history and legend of these now uninhabited islands to produce a new multifaceted musical work. Using lyrical, filmic, narrative and musical devices to bring different aspects of the work to life, ‘Heisgeir’ examines the changing nature and role of traditional culture and features acclaimed musicians Éamon Doorley, Ross Martin and Duncan Chisholm. Performances of 'Heisgeir' are confirmed for 2012.
