Éamon Doorley comes from a family steeped in the rich traditions of Irish music, and is widely considered to be one of the most versatile and sympathetic accompanists of songs and tunes in the traditional music scene today. Born in Dublin of Galway parents, Éamon was introduced to Irish traditional music at an early age. Music was always prevalent in his household, and a particular influence on him was his grand-uncle Martin ‘Shcan’ Garvey from Esker, Glenamaddy, who passed on a family tin-whistle to him, and the family flute to his brother Tom.
Éamon received tuition on the whistle from the legendary flute player and composer Vincent Broderick from Loughrea, Co.Galway, before moving onto playing the fiddle, being taught by Liam de Brúinéir and Nollag Ní Chathasaigh. At the age of sixteen he spent a summer working on the ferry’s from Dublin to Hollyhead and saved enough to buy his first Bouzouki in McNeills music shop on Capel Street, Dublin. It is on the Bouzouki that he first started playing with traditional band Danú when they travelled to the Interceltique Festival in Lorient, Brittany, in 1996.
Since then the band have released six albums and a dvd, have won multiple awards, represented the Irish Government on diplomatic and trade missions abroad, and toured every corner of North America and Europe. He now divides his time between touring and recording with Julie, and performing with Danú and various musician friends from Ireland and Scotland. |
